Everyday Plastic is an evidence-led social enterprise delivering accessible learning and campaigns that tackle the effects of the plastic problem that are felt across our society. Our highest profile project to date is The Big Plastic Count.

We are at an important stage in our development as a young and ambitious organisation. The newly created role of Chair will work in collaboration with our Non-Executive Directors and experienced Founder to lead us as we embark on our next strategic phase.

We are looking for a Chair who:

  • Feels a connection with our purpose;

  • Can demonstrate strategic senior leadership experience and knowledge of organisational development, fundraising and partnerships;

  • Displays a democratic and inclusive approach combined with political awareness and excellent communication skills – able to extend and challenge our thinking and grasp relevant issues in an evolving sector;

  • Actively supports the visibility and evolution of the organisation, through networking and senior-level external representation; and

  • Has a portfolio of high level organisational and governance skills including, change management, strategic planning, financial and risk management, organisational performance management and project management.

Role Description in more detail

Essential responsibilities of the Chair

  • To lead the Board, setting the Board Agenda focused on strategy, governance, future structure, financial oversight, organisational performance and values.

  • To conduct Board meetings effectively getting all Non-Executive Directors involved in the Board’s work and ensuring a focus on key tasks.

  • To take responsibility for the Board’s composition, development and succession planning.

  • Ensuring that decisions made by the Board advance the agreed purpose and values of the organisation.

  • To ensure effective communication with stakeholders (as appropriate), promoting a culture of inclusiveness, openness and demonstrating the highest standards of integrity.

  • The Chair is responsible for ensuring that the Non-Executive Directors receive accurate, timely and clear information, together with effective communication between the Board and the Founder.

  • On behalf of the Board the Chair will meet regularly with the Founder, supportively ensuring that he/she/they is/are directing the work of the organisation according to the agreed strategy.

  • Support the visibility and evolution of the organisation through networking, proactive relationship building and senior-level external representation by being an inspiring, confident and engaging advocate for Everyday Plastic.

Person Specification & Essential Skills

  • Strategic senior leadership experience, commercialisation, fundraising and partnerships.

  • Able to lead a Board into evolving the organisation’s strategy through collaborating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Able to understand and critically support the Founder.

  • Able to create and maintain a dynamic Board.

  • Ensure that Non-Executive Directors are truly independent so that they can function effectively.

  • Be a good listener, communicator and diplomat with the ability to influence and challenge.
