Research & Insights Consultant

Everyday Plastic is looking for a brilliant research and insights consultant to work on a major national campaign taking place in early 2022. This is a contracted role suitable for a freelance research, data and insights specialist. You will be working remotely with the option to work from our office in Margate, Kent

Everyday Plastic is a young and growing non-profit organisation focused on raising awareness around environmental issues. We educate businesses, communities, schools, families and individuals about our personal connection to the global plastic problem and encourage action at public, industry, and government level.

Now we have teamed up with Greenpeace UK to launch the largest survey of domestic plastic waste ever to have taken place in the country (and possibly the world!). The campaign will have significant impact at public, business and policy level engaging tens of thousands of participating households across the country.

This project is a public-driven research project, the success of which relies on quality insights, valid data, robust analysis and thorough reporting. There is an opportunity to shape the direction of our research as part of a small internal team, all in close collaboration with one of the world’s leading environmental organisations.

We are looking for someone who loves numbers and is savvy with numerical data to help us push decision-makers to implement urgent changes around single-use plastic and packaging waste.

Your core responsibilities include:

  • Researching and collating publicly available data to apply to data sets and samples

  • Developing, updating and maintaining existing data sets

  • Expanding our current research and analysis methodologies to ensure greater reliability and validity in results

  • Anticipating different scenarios, outcomes and margin of error

  • Using external research and stakeholders to hone, develop, test and roll out ways to analyse plastic waste

  • Helping to shape the direction of our reporting and actions

  • Using data visualisation and communication to tell the story

What we’re looking for in a successful candidate:

  • Confident that their methods can hold up to review

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of applying numbers and formulae to yield results is a must

  • The capacity and skills to understand and develop abstract concepts into concrete metrics

  • Process-driven and thorough with a good eye for detail

  • Proactive with the confidence to generate ideas

  • Quantitative analysis and qualitative reasoning to support both conceptual thinking and on-the-ground action.

Your knowledge and experience:

  • A proven track record in analysing data by building Excel or Google Sheets models and extracting insights, even when sources are scarce or data points seem ambiguous

  • Knowledge and understanding of how to use data to communicate tough issues to members of the public through to the government

  • An understanding of the global plastic problem, as well as other major environmental issues, is helpful

  • Whilst an academic background is not a necessity, experience of applying academic rigour and review within your work may be beneficial

  • 4+ years experience in data analysis and research or similar

Here at Everyday Plastic, we are committed to diversity and inclusion and promoting equal opportunities within our small organisation. You can read our Diversity & Inclusion policy here.
